Lissa Johnson

Needless to say, anxiety is a normal and inevitable part of human experience. We all know what it feels like to be nervous – even extremely anxious – about events such as a job interview, public speaking, a date, or some other challenging situation. A certain amount of anxiety can be helpful as it provides energy, excitement, and focus for the task. However, in a significant proportion of people anxiety can become incessant, extreme, and out of proportion to the situation, despite the person’s best efforts to stay calm. When anxiety interferes significantly with a person’s life or wellbeing it is often referred to as an anxiety disorder.

As a practice we offer expertise in providing treatment and counselling for anxiety and anxiety disorders. We ensure that we remain abreast of recent developments in the understanding and treatment of anxiety, and Lissa has travelled interstate and overseas to attend seminars and workshops from world leaders in anxiety research and treatment.

What is the difference between anxiety treatment and general counselling?

Although they overlap in many ways, psychological treatment for anxiety disorders is somewhat different to general counselling or therapy. Anxiety disorder treatment involves acquiring specific knowledge, skills and strategies relevant to particular anxiety conditions. While this takes place in the context of an individualised therapy process, anxiety treatment goes beyond general anxiety management skills such as relaxation. It involves learning what causes and maintains your particular anxiety disorder for you, and how to overcome it.

anxiety treatment sydney australia

Sydney Anxiety Disorders Practice

Results from the 1997 Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing revealed that 9.7%, or nearly 1.3 million, of adult Australians suffer from an anxiety disorder in any 12-month period. In response to this identified need, the Sydney Anxiety Disorders Practice (SADP) was established in 1998 with the aim of providing evidence-based psychological assessment and treatment services to adults suffering from anxiety disorders and other anxiety-related problems.

SADP is managed by Jonathan Gaston, Rachel Guthrie, Sally Neary & Brian O’Grady: four Clinical Psychologists with long-standing experience and expertise in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

SADP is committed to providing treatments that are short term, cost effective and scientifically validated.

The Sydney Anxiety Disorders Practice is committed to providing individual treatments that are short-term, cost effective and scientifically validated. The major treatment approach used is ‘Cognitive Behaviour Therapy’ (CBT), which has consistently been shown to have the most robust evidence supporting its efficacy for the psychological treatment of anxiety disorders. CBT is a skills-based approach which concentrates on three essential components:
Symptom management to decrease anxiety and increase effective coping.

Challenging unhelpful thought patterns that cause and maintain anxiety problems.

Changing behaviour to reduce avoidance and ensure that a person is able to function socially, occupationally and in all other areas of their life.

We are a group of highly-effective Clinical Psychologists with post-graduate clinical training, and many years of experience in treating anxiety disorders. We are empathic clinicians, committed to improving people’s mental health. We have up-to-date knowledge regarding research into anxiety treatment and only use evidence-based psychological intervention.

Dr Himalee Abeya

Dr Himalee Abeya

We consider anxiety a ‘disorder’ when it becomes persistent, extremely distressing and interferes with day to day functioning. There are different types of anxiety disorders. For example, someone who fears social contact or is terrified of being with people could have what we call social phobia or social anxiety. Sometimes people have intense and severe anxiety attacks on a continual basis and this could be due to panic disorder. If you have had the experience of repetitive and continued worries all the time you could perhaps have generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). People with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) too experience anxiety. So do you or your loved ones need anxiety treatment or advice in Sydney?

Anxiety disorders are quite treatable. The best evidence based methods are the use of psychological therapy (talking treatment sometimes known as counseling too) and medication. Often both methods are used in combination. Sometimes behavioural strategies are also used where the aim is to modify behaviour associated with the anxiety condition. Anxiety treatment can help you live a happy and peaceful life.

Apart from the aforementioned, cognitive behavioural treatment is a well-researched method of treating anxiety disorders. This method involves identifying, understanding and then modifying negative or dysfunctional thought patterns. Sometimes simple behavioural techniques like graded exposure to the feared object is used with success too.

Medication is through the use of antidepressants, which have a good profile of reducing anxiety. These tablets take some time to correct the symptoms and it therefore very important to access professional help in understanding your response to treatment.

Dr Abeya, based in Sydney, always takes time to listen to a client’s concerns and commences treatment by providing a good understanding of the condition. The first step towards getting better is to better understand the cycles that work to create your anxiety. After a discussion she will be able to suggest good treatment options to help you and guide you to make the right treatment choices.
